Course Overview

This Mental Health Awareness Training Course equips staff and individuals with essential knowledge and skills to understand, support, and respond to mental health conditions in the workplace.

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, Learners will:

  • Understand what mental health is and how it affects individuals
  • Recognise common mental health conditions and their symptoms
  • Be familiar with relevant legislation and duty of care responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively and supportively with individuals experiencing mental distress
  • Promote mental wellbeing and reduce stigma in care environments
  • Know when and how to seek further support for service users

Introduction to Mental Health

  • What is mental health?
  • Mental health vs. mental illness
  • The importance of mental wellbeing in care settings

Common Mental Health Conditions

  • Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia
  • Dementia and cognitive decline
  • Recognising signs and symptoms in older adults and people with complex needs

Legislation and Compliance

  • Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007)
  • Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Care Act 2014 and safeguarding responsibilities
  • Equality Act 2010 (mental health as a protected characteristic)

Understanding Stigma and Attitudes

  • The impact of stigma on service users
  • Challenging misconceptions
  • Promoting dignity, respect, and inclusion

Communication and Support Strategies

  • Active listening and empathy
  • Non-judgemental responses and language use
  • De-escalation techniques and supportive interventions

Responding to Mental Health Needs

  • How to support someone in distress
  • Referring to mental health professionals or crisis teams
  • Self-care for staff: boundaries and stress awareness
